Today, when I start visual studio and click on Add new Item I found that WebForm option is missing from visual studio templates. Thanks to Eric Hammersley who gave the perfect solution. To add missing templates you need to run following command on visual studio command prompt.
Close all instance of Visual Studio. Open visual studio command prompt and type,
devenv /installvstemplates
Press Enter. Let the process be complete and now open visual studio. You will get all missing templates under Visual Studio installed templates.
Happy Programming !!
If you are running Vista, you should run the VS2005 command prompt via Right Click -> Run As Administrator, as this command requires you to run in an elevated mode.

Well done! Thanks for posting this. I had the same problem (missing ascx template) in Visual Studio 2008 and your solution worked.
Thanks….
FYI, if you are running the 64 bit version on Vista 64, you need to open the x64 Win64 command prompt to run this command. I tried it with just the “Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt” from the menu and it did not work, so I said what the heck, and tried the x64 Win64 command prompt, and it worked. Thanks for the solution!
Thanx.
Why VS is so stupid?? I spent more than 1 hour to understand how to create a windows application form in visual c#…
Thanks bud… even though simple, very helpful..
Thank you so much for the help. Im new to visual studio and it really helped me out. You guys are doing great job
Thanks a lot! For a moment I thought I’d have to reinstall the whole Visual Studio application! You saved me a lot of time 🙂
Hi All,
I use 64 bit version on Vista 64, and tried “Visual Studio 2008 x64 Win64 command prompt”. It didn’t work for me.
I got ‘The operation could not be competed. The requested operation requires elevation.’ If someone knows, please help
Thanks in advanced!

I final figured it out.
I need turn off User Account Control (UAC) in control panel before running ‘devenv /installvstemplates’.
Thanks All.
I had the same problem and it was missing .zip template files in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates\CSharp\1033 folder
These files:
WebForm.zip
WebClass.zip
MasterPage.zip
etc.
I copied all of these .zip files from my other PC into this folder and problem solved.
How did this happen? Disk Cleanup – Along with other files I selected *.zip files for deletion, Doh!
worked like a charm. not sure why the install of vs2008 didn’t do this. i installed sql 08 first which installed it for reporting services. i wonder if this was the issue.

hey i hv tried everything…… devenv /installvstemplates cmd in vb 2008 is not working …”the error is devenv is not recognized as internal or external command ” and the other solution I found on some website is”Change the Visual Studio user item template location to the folder where the standard templates are located ( C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates ). ”
But again “Item templates” is not present in my IDE folder…
plzzzzz help me in this …give me some solution so that i’ll be able to find the missing templates in “add item ” option especially the crystal report one.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC>devenv /installvstemplates
‘devenv’ não é reconhecido como um comando interno
ou externo, um programa operacional ou um arquivo de lotes.
translating:
‘devenv’ is not recognized as an internal command
or external, an operational program or a batch file.
Please, what should I do ?
Hello
if you are using Visual Studio 2008, you need to run the command devenv /installvstemplates from C:\Program files\Microsoft Visula Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE folder, otherwise you will get the error unrecognized command error !
bye..Philkos
are you going to post a reply to the people who are complaining that devenv doesn’t work for them?
Thanks a lot..
It Really works for me..
Workd for me as well!
How come the templates got deleted in the first place, though?
All I can remember doing is installing ReSharper, StyleCop, VSCommands, CodeMaid and GhostDoc.
thank you very much
and for very simple steps follow this
win 7
start menu –> all programs –> microsoft visaul studio 2008 or 2005
–> visaul studio tools –> right click and run as administrator (((( visaul studio 2008/2005 command prompet)))
–> write devenv /installvstemplates
then press enter and waite till new command line apear (finsh the process)
open vs2008 and enjoy it
Thanks, Its worked..
Is there anything different about 2008 R2? I’ve followed the very clear directions about:
1 – turned UAC off in control panel
2 – ran VB as the adminstrator
3 – created VS command prompt as described above
4 – ran the command devenv /installvstemplates from C:\Program files\Microsoft Visula Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE folder
When the command was executed it paused for 3 – 4 seconds before the prompt came back. I thought I had it but …… Opened a new project and there are the Busienss Intelligence project types and ‘Other Project Types’. Expanding other project types and selecting VIsual Studio Solutions only displays the ‘Blank Solution’.
I double checked the Tools/Options/Projects and Solutions/General template path names and they seem correct. Point to the directory created by install ‘mydocuments…….’. Looked at those directories and the template directories are empty.
Aaarg!! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated 🙂
OK… Agora funcionou. Obrigado pela dica
NOT WORKING! Can anyone give clear and concise instructions for how to do this with windows XP. It would be much appreciated for us newbies.
Make sure that you are selecting higher version of .Net Framework. Some Project Templates are depending on the version of .Net framework. Hope it will be helpful for you guys…
In visual studio 2008 c# asp.net, Crystal Reports is opening as a Binary file. The tools reqd. to edit the crystal reports missing. Under the Help of Visual Studio, Info, the Crystal Report is not mentioned.
I am not able to view the CR as a normal report. Installtemplates not working. That exe is missing.

hey there and thank you for your information – I’ve certainly picked up anything new from right here. I did however expertise a few technical points using this site, as I experienced to reload the site lots of times previous to I could get it to load correctly. I had been wondering if your hosting is OK? Not that I’m complaining, but slow loading instances times will often affect your placement in google and can damage your high-quality score if ads and marketing with Adwords. Anyway I’m adding this RSS to my email and can look out for much more of your respective fascinating content. Make sure you update this again soon..
I get an error message which reads “The operation could not be completed”
My Visual Studio 2010 doesn’t have any Inherited Form templates. Does anybody happen to know how to add the template to the IDE?

For the Case of sharePoint 2010 If You are not able to see the SharePoint templates Please do the Following steps(very Simple):->
1> Insert VS2010 Ultimate/Professional CD in the CD-ROM
2> Go to Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
3> Select Microsoft Visual Studio(Ultimate/Professional) & select Uninstall/Change
4> Pop Up will Come select the ADD/Remove Option
5> You will get the SharePoint Tool(Unchecked & Red X), Please check this it will become Green.
6> Click Install.
It worked for me.(I have windows 7-Ultimate/SQL Server 2008-R2/SharePoint 2010 Server Edition)..Also Please note It doesnt Matters which Order U install the Softwares but it is recommended to Install SQL First(i.e the Database) then VS2010(Ultimate/Proff – Express will not Have SharePoint) & then Install the SP2010 foundation/Server.
Thanks
