Recently I need to generate restore point on my Windows Server 2003 Statndard Edition. For windows XP restore point is available at Start -> Program Files -> Accessories -> System Tools – > System restore. I looked in Windows Server 2003 and it was not there. I search on google and found a really good link that shows the way how to install restore point on Windows Server 20003. Here is that.

Creating System Restore point in 2003 server.. Great It Works
Hi kris,
All files mentioned here is available in windows XP system,
First copy the below mentioned files inside system32 (2003 server)
sr.sys
srclient.dll
srrstr.dll
srsvc.dll
and then create a folder “Restore” in system32 and copy the below mentioned files inside..
filelist.xml
rstrui.exe
srdiag.exe
srframe.mmf
Now run the file “AddSystemRestoreEntries.reg” and add the values in registry by selecting yes
and then right click on the sr.inf file and select install….when it asks for the path, Point it to “system32” folder…once the installation is over the system will prompt for reboot.
After rebooting you can see the System restore in “All Programs–>Accessories–> System Tools –> System Restore”
Hi Suresh, I am not able to follow the steps which you have mentioned please could you send any doc if you have.

Hi,
I’ve followed your instructions to the letter. When I boot, I get the following dialog box (RUNDLL):
Error loading srclient.dll
%1 is not a valid Win32 application.
I also get this when I run “rundll32 srclient.dll,CreateFirstRunRp” in the Run box. I’m running Win2k3 R2 server 64-bit.
Any ideas? I’ve checked the registry, everything seems to be intact. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I saw your following post on one of the sites. Can you let me know if you fixed this issue. If yes, can you send me the resolution too as I am having the same issue at my end.
Thanks Man.

Thank you for your fine article. The installation process seems to have gone smoothly, no issues on Windows Server 2003 SP2.
After rebooting however, I am getting an error about a driver or service failed to start…which I was not getting before, so it’s related to this.
I checked the services, all things there appear to be fine. I checked the drivers and hidden drivers, all is good there too.
I’d like to resolve this error message, if possible! 🙂
I would also say, that despite the error, it seems the functionality has been added probably, at least the icon is there, it starts up properly, seems to have a few days of data.
Having said that however, I have not tried to do any type of restore yet.
Hi,
Could you please help me in providing a step by step process of restoring Exchange 2003 from back up from cluster perspective. Assuming that we have a cluster with active passive and completely broke down including the nodes. Need a step by step process for the same ASAP.

Hi,
I have tried these steps, it has created system restore in system tools under Accessories.
I have created a restore point. Then I have deleted 2 files from my desktop.
I have tried to restore the state from restore point, system got restarted, after startup, I got message that System has been restore from restore point, but still I have got those 2 files, which I have deleted from desktop,
I have check in System Restore window, C: and D: both are under monitoring status.
Anyone can help me on this ?
Anyone has tried this before ?
windows in-built backup is basically good, but something wrong with the restore process. So I would rather use some other utilities with good backup and restore features and advanced snapshot and universal restore.
servers are commonly replaced as a new one within 3-5 years, so I would like to keep an useful utility. nothing about windows in=built one
Among all my using, I only find easis todo backup owns all these, and what’s more, the price is acceptable for me, a little company. i like it best
share the way i found it:

I’ve been reading your blog once in a while and decided to reply for the first time, thank you for writing all of this.

Does anyone have try this?
Hi Prasad Beligala and others,
I have followed your instructions (31-Dec-2008) with OS Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2 and it all worked; I am able to create Restore Points.
However when I try to go back to any previous retore point, it fails! What to do? How can I create usable restore points with OS Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2?
windows server versions dont come with system restore for a good reason…
when you restore to a previous point, you’re screwing up all data chaned/saved by other computers connected to the server (especially on a domain setup). as each terminal connectd has it’s own registry, which is not restored with the servers registry, hence.. conflicts and a total mess takes place doing a restore.
if you want a real backup, find a 3rd party full backup program, that will back the entire system up to an external drive. there are many that aren’t expensive (also a few freeware ones that will do the job.. but slowely). most of these backups, much like windows built in backup.. will allow you to restore specific folders and specific parts of the registry, so you dont mess up other things in the process.
